PLANTS MAKE SUPERB GIFTS, PROVIDING JOY AND BEAUTY WHICH WILL GROW AND LAST FOR YEARS.
Sue's unique gardeners' gift ideas
Sue Lewis from Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre, which is located at Monkton Heathfield between Bridgwater and Taunton, is making special ‘Grow Your Own’ bouquets for people who would like a unique gift for their loved ones.
Sue, who is House Plant Supervisor at the family-run garden centre, said: “I’ve developed a new section in the garden centre called Sue’s Gardeners’ Gift Ideas and we’re trying out some really unique ideas.
“I thought that a bouquet of strawberry plants would be a fantastic present for a loved one and I’ve never seen it done before.
“The strawberry bouquets are a wonderfully quirky gift that hold the same sentiment as a bunch of store bought flowers, but they last infinitely longer and are a great place to start for anyone who is interested in growing their own fruit and vegetables.
“They brighten up the garden, are easy to maintain, produce delicious fruit and can be grown almost anywhere, from window boxes to hanging baskets.”
As well as the strawberry bouquets, the garden centre stocks a number of other soft fruit plants including raspberries, blackberries, red currants, cranberries and gooseberries, as well as more unusual fruits, such as white currants and loganberries.
Sue continued: “We can make up numerous bouquets of other plants or gift wrap them as required.”

Many plants have names to match specific gift occasions and anniversaries. Our suggestions for some popular ones are listed below (availability will depend on the season).
Silver Wedding: Camellia ‘Silver Anniversary’ Ruby Wedding: Penstemon ‘Ruby’ Golden Wedding: Hosta ‘Golden Anniversary’, Rudbeckia ‘Golden Jubilee’ Happy Birthday: Rosa ‘Birthday Wishes’, Rosa ‘Happy Birthday’ Happy Anniversary: Nemesia ‘Celebration’ Wedding Day: Rosa ‘Wedding Day’
To make your celebration plant even more special, we offer a gift wrapping service (subject to a nominal charge) and, with a little notice, we can pot up certain plants into glazed or terracotta pots of your choice.
The Victorian language of flowers
Flowers have been given meanings for centuries. The Romantic poets such as Keats & Wordsworth were responsible for promoting them, but it wasn't until the Victorian era that a special code for flowers was devised. In the 19th century, flowers were used as a secret code between lovers, valentines and firends, with each gift of a plant or bouquet bearing a specific message.
